Has your life been affected by breast cancer?
If not you, perhaps a mother, father, sister, brother, friend
or neighbor has suffered this devastating disease.
In 2002, 203,500 new cases of female invasive breast
cancer will be diagnosed and 39,600 women will die
from the disease. And men are not immune - 1,500 male
cases will be diagnosed in 2002 and projections show
that 400 men will die from the disease. Based on
the current life expectancy for women in the United States,
one out of nine women will develop breast cancer in her
lifetime - a risk that was one out of 14 in 1960.
The annual Mother's Day Breast Cancer Canal Walk is one
way you can help in the fight against breast cancer. With
all proceeds benefiting "Mary's Room" - the wig
room located at the American Cancer Society and renamed
in memory of Mary Marvin. Reach to Recovery volunteers help
clients with their head covering choices and assist in any
way they can. The service is free to anyone with cancer.
Some of our friends have shared their experiences:
"Hearing
the words: 'You have breast cancer' is devastating. The
treatment that often follows can rob self-esteem and dignity.
Mary's Room did not let that happen to me. With help from
the volunteers there, I was able to continue work when
I was well enough and every day life became possible without
looking so different.""I don't think I have
ever been as scared as I was the morning I woke up with
a blanket of hair on my pillow. I credit the wig room
for helping to settle my fears and making me whole again.
The volunteers there are on my list of heroes."
Your
support of the Mother's Day Breast Cancer Canal Walk will
help keep Mary's Room running and maintain an inventory
of wigs and turbans while providing dignity and choice to
many suffering from cancer. Further, your generosity will
help educate Niagara County and surrounding areas on the
importance of breast cancer awareness, self-examination
and mammograms.
Each year, the walk has grown more successful and raised
more dollars. But we can't do it without your help. Please
consider a tax-deductible donation to this year's event.
Several sponsorship opportunities are available on the enclosed
form that can be made in memory or honor of anyone you wish
to recognize. Please make donations out to MOTHER'S DAY
BREAST CANCER CANAL WALK and send the enclosed sponsor form
and payment to:
